The Blue Canyon Trail Race™ is a wild and scenic trail race that returns June 5, 2010 for its second running. This challenging out-and-back trail race predominantly traverses through sections on the north side of the Upper Santa Ynez Mountain Range, while summiting entrants periodically catch glimpses of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. This section of the Los Padres National Forest in early June is typically a vibrant hue of chaparral green dusted with the brilliant spring wild flower blooms sustained by the late spring rains which also serve to keep the trails and dirt roads moist and compacted. Last year’s inaugural running was kept cool with the typical coastal fog that we locals kindly refer to as “the June Gloom”. Don’t get fooled though! This lingering fog can disappear overnight and allow the mercury to easily ascend upwards of 90º or more. This year we have added a 15k and 25k for those seeking a shorter distance event, ideal for those guests or companions who are more simply satisfied. Whether running the 15k or the 100k course, you’re going to Earn Your Return™ on this elevation gain and loss course. We will have the “overstocked” aid stations again this year to accommodate what is expected to be a sold out event. We have moved our start/ finish location over to the “Campsite” section of the Rancho Oso Guest Ranch. We did this to let the entrants get the “Arroyo Burro” ascent and decent section done early in the race. Additionally this change allows entrants, family and guest a better proximity to Ranch Oso’s guest amenities. Hosted at Rancho Oso, just 30 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, the Blue Canyon Trail Race™ offers a family-friendly destination, with great amenities and activities. Get your on- site overnight accommodations reserved early, as they are sure to go quickly this year.
In response to the positive feedback after the inaugural running in June 2009, we have made or are currently working to complete the following improvements to offer an even better race. Those changes include, but are not limited to:
The Blue Canyon Trail Race™ is one of four sustainable and commercially permitted trail races that Blacksmith Endurance Co. founder Robert Gilcrest and associates Kevin Steele and Sandra Sanger developed to benefits the Los Padres Forest Association and promote Santa Barbara’s epic trail running
The 2009 inaugural running raised several thousands of valuable dollars that were put to work to preserve and protect the multi-use resources of the Los Padres National Forest
